Where the People Are
This fascinating animation, originally from John Burn-Murdoch at the Financial Times, shows where and when populations have grown and shrunk over the last 500 years through the lens of the world’s most populous cities. This chart pairs nicely with another visualization from The Economist that summarizes the history of the three biggest economies at various time intervals since 1AD. We noted the large role emerging markets play today and the increasing role that they will likely play. Just as importantly, we see the importance of innovation and good governance in helping economies thrive, and how quickly fortunes can change in their absence.
