A Choice in Chips
Intel is focused on lowering the power consumption of its chips without sacrificing processing speeds. This effort is starting to really shrink the main advantage that ARM architecture has over x86. Looking forward 24 months, we think the power consumption difference between these architectures may be so small that most people will choose to avoid the compromises associated with ARM chips for tablet style devices. We foresee a world in which tablets could mostly use x86 chips. Who will have an operating system designed to best take advantage of that form factor? Right now, Microsoft has a clear advantage with Windows 8. It will be interesting to see if Apple and Google catch up before the paradigm changes.
